Created in 1901 under the direction of the architect Willard T. Sears in the city of Boston in the United States, this magnificent Venetian palace takes its name from a great lover of art and literature. Indeed, Isabella Stewart Gardner, former owner of the museum, has been able, throughout her life, to assemble a vast collection of works as rare as they are fascinating. Inspired by the architectural movements of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance arts, Isabella dedicated three of the four floors of the building to the exhibition of her works. Among them are more than 7,000 art objects, 3,000 books and manuscripts, and 7,000 other pieces from various world regions such as Ancient Rome, medieval Europe, Asia, the Islamic world and the French and American nineteenth century.
