This emblematic place of Marseille has a history that dates back to the thirteenth century when the first chapels were built on this hill. However, the basilica we see today was built between 1853 and 1864 in a neo-Byzantine style. To protect Marseille from the armies of Charles V, the king of France, Francis I built a fort in 1524, a maritime defense that the city lacked.
Notre-Dame de la Garde is a place of worship and an important landmark for sailors, fishermen and the people of Marseille.
There is a vast difference between the basilica and the crypt. The basilica is quite a tall and ornate building, unlike the crypt, which is a shallow building with no decoration except for a few capitals.
Inside the basilica, you'll find stained-glass windows, sculptures, and votive offerings, offerings from sailors and grateful locals. From a panoramic view, you can also discover the city of Marseille, the Old Port, the Frioul Islands, and the Mediterranean Sea. Notre-Dame de la Garde is rich in history and spirituality.
On August 15th, Notre Dame de la Garde welcomes pilgrims to meditate.
The activities in Notre Dame de la Garde are guided tours or self-guided tours. Ride a Segway up to Notre Dame de la Garde, passing by the Cathedral of the Major, the Mucem and the Old Port. ◄
