For Japanese shintoists and buddhists, Mount Fuji is an important pilgrimage site. They have been climbing up to say their prayers for many years now. Among the oldest and most important shrines in Japan is Sengen Shrine located at Mount Fuji's base.
Kawaguchiko houses the Mount Fuji Museum. One museum in Kawaguchiko, Japan is dedicated to showing visitors the history of Mount Fuji. Interactive displays are used to explain how the mountain was formed and has been active all these years. The Fujinomiya based Mount Fuji Analysis Centre showcases the stunning natural beauty and cultural wealth of the area.
Even beginners will find lasting experiences from hiking Mount Fuji. There are easy trails for families as well as more difficult ones for experienced hikers. The main season for climbing is July through September but one can climb at other times with right gear. Villages with beautiful scenery and lakes where you can relax surrounded by nature are located at the foot of Mount Fiji. For example, Lake Kawaguchiko, Lake Motosuko, and Lake Yamanakako are some of these very picturesque places that offer water activities besides providing stunning views of this mountain.

Mount Fuji hosts many festivals all year round including fireworks displays. One such major festival takes place in July called Fuji Matsuri which marks the start of climbing season there. In August there is also another holiday called Five Lakes Fireworks Festival which takes place in Fujisubaru area lighting up night skies in colorful fireworks displays over these five lakes.
