The old town of Zanzibar city known as Stone Town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of narrow streets winding through old houses and grand mosques. Built in the 19th century the Sultans palace offers a glimpse into the lives of sultans who ruled Zanzibar. The National museum shows you what happened on these islands from prehistoric times to present days while walking through the spice market enjoy Arabo-Swahili architecture and feel the ancient air of this town.
There are numerous green reserves and parks throughout Zanzibar Island. The Jozani-Changuu UNESCO biosphere reserve is home to rare red colobus monkeys which exist nowhere else in the world except Zanzibar while Mnemba Atoll Marine Park with its colourful coral reefs and tropical fish species attracts divers and snorkelers alike. On one hand Kiwengwa Forest Reserve takes you through indigenous fauna and flora of the island with its walks.
Zanzibar has an abundant wildlife resource. Jozani Chwaka Bay national park harbors red Colobus monkeys which are endemic species within this forest area. Dolphins turtle watching among other activities can be done via boat trips here.
Many authentic villages offer a glimpse into the local lifestyle. Visitors often stay in local dwellings to experience the culture firsthand. Kizimbani fishing village and Bumbini spice plantations are perfect examples. These locations provide cultural enrichment centered around Zanzibar's famous spice trade.
In Zanzibar, festivals are everything. The month of July is about the Zanzibar festival that is all about music, dance and culture. In August there is the dhow festival to honor maritime traditions.
