The Zocalo is the city’s main square which is very full of life. The Government Palace is located there, and it has murals by a renowned Mexican artist called Rufino Tamayo. One of the most important Museums in Mexico is the Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca – it has many ancient and colonial objects. At the Latest Art Museum in Oaxaca you can see works by well-known Mexican and world artists.
Down at the Pacific coast, there are also Puerto Escondido as well as Huatulco beaches. These are best places for relaxation and sunbathing. You can discover nature in national parks including Benito Juárez and Sierra Norte. In Benito Juárez, you will find distinct plants and animals. The Sierra Norte on the other hand is a mountainous area with charming villages and footpaths.
Nearby are fascinating archaeological sites like Monte Albán, an ancient Zapotec city on a hill. Also Mitla, with stunning Zapotec murals. Visit authentic villages too - San Bartolo Coyotepec for pottery and Teotitlán del Valle for weaving.
Oaxaca hosts many yearly festivals. July's Guelaguetza is biggest, celebrating state dances and music. November's Day of the Dead festival colorfully celebrates life and death.
