Hiking is a must to get to Choquequirao. First, the trek is not that easy, but this adventure is worth it. Several excursions are offered, and they usually start in Cusco. That said, many choose to go through Capuliyoc. The classic route continues on an equestrian trail and leads to the archaeological area of Choquequirao, which usually covers four or five days. Apart from this trail is also the Huanipaca road, which at first glance seems more straightforward. Along the way, travelers will head to Tambobamba and can continue to the rural community of Kiunalla to the ancient hamlet of San Ignacio before reaching the Apurimac River. As for the last route, it starts in the town of Mollepata, crosses the Salkantay Pass, and reaches the middle part of the Santa Teresa River Valley before heading towards the community of Yanama to reach the final destination.
Regarding things to see in the sector, it is essential to know that Choquequirao is divided into 12 sectors. Depending on the trekking route chosen, adventurers can discover many elements. One of them is the Hanan temple, located north of the main square. There are temples, enclosures, water channels and a staggered waterfall. To the southeast of the temple, there are also colas. These are buildings that were used to store food to supply the population.
Those who lead to the main square will be able to marvel at the Kallankas, which are massive two-story, triangular-shaped structures believed to have served as dwellings. They will also see the Sunturwasi, which is the main temple. After that, the Gates, monuments dedicated to the ancestors, will be discovered. According to archaeologists, they contain sacred spaces to keep the malkis - mummies.
The visit can continue with the Ushno, particularly important because of its deep religious significance. Its platform consists of three horseshoe-shaped terraces for religious rituals, sacrificial offerings and libations. It was also an essential astronomical observation center with political, religious and military implications. ◄
