The city center is home to several representative monuments of Savannakhet. In front of the Mekong River is the temple of Wat Xayaphoum. Erected in 1542, it is the oldest and largest sanctuary in the province. The architecture of this building is simply phenomenal. You cannot only walk around the place but also meditate there.
The Cathedral of St. Teresa is also symbolic of the province of Savannakhet. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style at the end of the First World War.
