Adalaj Stepwell

The Adalaj Stepwell, also known as Adalaj ni Vav, sits in the village of Adalaj in Gandhinagar District, Gujarat, India. It is a stepwell of the kind that once gave villages and travellers a cool, shaded place to draw water, and it stands as one of the best-known examples of its type in the region.

Built in the 15th century by Queen Rudabai, the stepwell descends through five stories. Its walls and pillars carry intricate carving that blends Indo-Islamic architectural details, so the visit rewards close looking. As you move downward, the air grows cooler and the light softens, which is much of the pleasure of a place like this.

What the visit offers

  • A multi-storey descent through a historic stepwell, with decorative detail at every level
  • A sense of how the structure once served as a resting place for travellers and pilgrims
  • A heritage site that suits slow, unhurried exploration rather than a quick stop

Planning your trip

Adalaj is a short distance from Gandhinagar, the state capital, so the stepwell makes a natural half-day outing for visitors already exploring the city or the surrounding area. Because it is a village site, it is best approached as a quiet place to walk and look rather than a large, busy attraction. For current visiting arrangements, you can call the site's listed contact number, +91-79-2321-2157, before you set out.
