Gouvernement Aswan

Aswan Governorate lies in the far south of Egypt, in Africa, and is best known as the home of the Aswan High Dam and a number of ancient Nubian monuments. For many travellers it is the gateway to the temples of Abu Simbel, which sit further south in the same region.

What the visit offers

Aswan suits visitors who want to combine large-scale modern engineering with older history. The High Dam is one of the region's defining landmarks, and the surrounding landscape shows how the river and its valley have shaped life here for a very long time. The Nubian monuments scattered through the governorate give a sense of the cultures that developed along the Nile far from the north of the country.

Planning a trip

  • Abu Simbel: the temples are the main reason many people make the journey south, and Aswan is the usual base for reaching them.
  • The High Dam: a practical stop for anyone interested in how the Nile is managed today.
  • Nubian heritage: the monuments and the wider region reflect a distinct culture, worth approaching with curiosity and respect.

Because Aswan is a governorate rather than a single site, it works best as a base for a few days, with time set aside for the temples and the dam. Check current access arrangements before setting out, as travel options to the more remote monuments can change.
