This special evening marks kompa's 70th birthday, celebrating the Haitian music and dance style created in the mid-1950s by saxophonist Nemours Jean-Baptiste and recognised in 2025 as part of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage. The event brings together dance instruction, live music, and a DJ set in one vibrant outdoor programme.
From 18:00, the MC Konpa Dance School — led by Meggie, a pioneer of kompa promotion in Canada and internationally — offers an introduction to the sensual, rhythmic basics of kompa. Meggie is known for fostering an atmosphere of learning, fun, and cultural connection rooted in her Haitian heritage.
From 19:00, Haitian-born Montréal-based singer Richy Jay takes the stage with his blend of kompa, zouk, and afropop. Named Canadian-Haitian Artist of the Year at the 2024 Haitian Music Awards, Richy Jay's latest album Caribbean Love explores themes of resilience, love, and identity across Haitian Creole, French, English, and Spanish.
From 20:30, DJ Nalee closes the evening with a high-energy set fusing Afro, Caribbean, and kompa sounds. A Montréal-based DJ of Haitian descent, she is celebrated for reading the crowd and creating an immersive cultural experience on the dance floor.
