Palacio de la Aljafería

The Aljafería Palace stands in Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon in northeastern Spain. It is an 11th-century Islamic palace, and it remains one of the clearest surviving examples of the architecture of that period in the city.

Its interiors are known for their Mudéjar work, the decorative style that developed in Spain under Christian rule while keeping many Islamic design traditions. Visitors can see the intricate plasterwork and geometric patterns that give the rooms their character. The palace is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, which places it among the places recognised for their outstanding cultural value.

The building has been shaped by several cultures over the centuries, and a visit traces that layering of Islamic, Jewish and Christian influences. Rather than a single period on display, the palace reads as a sequence of rooms and details, each reflecting the people who used and altered the place.

Why visit

  • To see Islamic-era architecture and Mudéjar decoration up close
  • To understand how several cultures left their mark on one building
  • To combine the visit with the rest of Zaragoza, a city with a long history of its own

Because the palace is still the seat of the Aragonese Parliament, the building is part of the working life of the region as well as a monument. Those interested in history, architecture or the cultural layers of Spain will find it a rewarding stop on a trip through Aragon.
