Richard Avedon: Immortal. Portraits of Aging, 1951-2004

Richard Avedon: Immortal. Portraits of Aging, 1951-2004 brings together close to 100 photographs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, tracing how one of America's most influential photographers approached the subject of aging across more than five decades of work.

The exhibition features portraits of a wide range of notable figures — among them Chet Baker, Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison, Truman Capote, Duke Ellington, Patti Smith, and Jean Renoir — alongside images of everyday Americans, documenting the physical and emotional dimensions of growing older.

Richard Avedon (1923–2004) was a landmark figure in 20th-century photography, long associated with Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. He became known for his stark, unretouched black-and-white portraits that deliberately departed from the flattering editorial conventions of his era.

The exhibition runs until August 9, 2026, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).
