It is impossible not to start by strolling through one of the most beautiful squares in Italy: Piazza Maggiore. Take your time and marvel at the sumptuous palaces surrounding you and the Basilica of San Petronio, a jewel of Gothic architecture. Not far away is the monumental Fountain of Neptune: admire the imposing statue of the Greek god and let yourself be enchanted by the Nereids.
If you want to see it all from higher, climb the 500 steps of the Asinelli Tower, the highest tower of the Due Torri, a symbol of power and wealth in the 11th and 12th centuries and now one of Bologna's most famous monuments.
At nightfall, the famous arcaded streets take on a mysterious and romantic atmosphere. A stroll through the historic center of Bologna and the Quadrileto district will reveal the infinite variations of red and ochre so specific to Bologna. If you get a little hungry, the Quadrileto is the ideal neighborhood, as it is full of local shops where everyone can find something to eat.
If you want to take a longer walk, put on your good shoes and visit the Madonna di San Luca sanctuary. Starting from the Saragossa Gate, on the east side of the city, you will follow the arcades leading to the sanctuary from where you will have a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings. During this walk, you will discover the Portico di San Luca, emblematic of Bologna, and the Arco del Meloncello, a rococo structure dating from the 18th century.
Let yourself be carried away by the joie de vivre of the university district and stroll along the emblematic Via Zamboni. Nearby you will find the Botanical Garden and fascinating museums like the Palazzo Poggi, which houses the historical collections of the Institute of Sciences, the MAMbo and its collection of modern art, and the Pinacoteca Nazionale, which offers an array of Italian art that spans the period from the 12th to the 18th century. But also many bars and a cheerful atmosphere that will carry you through the night. ◄
