One of the most awe-inspiring attractions in Chiapas is the renowned archaeological site of Palenque. This was a city of great importance in the Mayan civilization, and the area has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tucked away in the heart of the jungle, Palenque reveals its treasures, including the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace, the Group of the Cross, and a museum housing over 200 artifacts in 6 rooms.
Misol-Ha can be the next visit. This 30m waterfall located in the lush jungle is staggering. It is located near the ruins of Palenque, as well as the Agua Azul Falls and the Mayan site of Tonina. Then, once amazed by the Misol-Ha, explorers can stop at the Agua Azul waterfalls. In addition to being beautiful, it is possible to swim in it, unlike the previous one. After that, there is Tonina to visit. In this location, the focus is on the Acropolis, a 7-storey structure built on a hill that brings together a multitude of altars, times, houses and palaces. It must also be noted that there are 260 stairs to climb to reach the top of this great pyramid. But after all that effort, the reward is to find oneself in front of an incredible view. There are also two Mayan pelota playgrounds and a museum on site.
As for those looking for ecotourism, the Lacandona Forest lends itself very well to it. It was declared a "natural monument" in 1992 and thus protects animals such as jaguars, eagles, toucans and several species of monkeys. In addition to the animals, it is, above all, possible to meet the Lacandon community, known for its unique way of life and traditional practices, to share the daily life of its inhabitants. But that's not all; this jungle is fascinating to venture into the Montes Azules Biosphere Nature Reserve or Bonampak, Yaxchilan and Lacanja archaeological sites.
San Cristóbal de las Casas is the right spot for exploring the colonial city of Chiapas. Visitors will see the Zocalo—the town's central square—and the Church of the Guadalupe, the textile center of the Mayan world. They can also stop at the markets to discover crafts or sweets. ◄
