Around the canyon, there are several villages that preserve their traditions. Maca is one of these villages, located north of the canyon. Yanque is another interesting village to the east. The hot springs are a treasure of the canyon. They are located near the village of Chivay, to the northeast. The water naturally comes out of the ground. Its temperature can reach 38 degrees Celsius. The minerals in the water are good for the skin. They also help tired muscles. After a long day of walking, it's the perfect place. You can relax and admire the mountains. Some springs have small pools. Others are larger. There are even developed swimming pools. It's a good mix of nature and comfort.
The canyon offers many hiking trails. To the north, the Cabanaconde trail is the most popular. It descends to the bottom of the canyon. To the east is the Tapay trail. It runs along the Colca River. The views of the canyon are always magnificent. The animals in the canyon are varied. In addition to condors, you can see llamas. These are typical Andean animals. There are also alpacas. They look like llamas but are smaller.
Terrace farming is particular to the region. People cultivate on steep slopes. They make steps in the mountain. On these steps, they grow their crops. It's a very old technique. It allows cultivation even when there isn't much flat land.
