The state of Connecticut has a very present maritime tradition, and the mission of the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic is to introduce it to the public and act for preservation and restoration. This site opened in 1929 and is described as a living maritime museum while simultaneously being a real marina. In addition to a museum where artifacts tracing the United States naval history are visible, the Seaport Museum has a collection of sailboats and boats, a reconstruction of a 19th-century maritime village, and offers workshops, initiations and exhibitions. In the village, traditional navigation professions are exercised, such as sailing, rope or cooperage. There are also craft shops selling fabrics or marine instruments and offering demonstrations. A festival of sea songs is also organized at the Seaport Museum.
Every year at the Port of New London, the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival is held to "celebrate the sea." This event aims to allow visitors to interact with those who work at sea: sailors, military, fishermen, and protectors of marine life. On-site, children's workshops and concerts are organized, and ships of all kinds are on display.
