Created in 1959, it owes its name to the armadillos that populated the region in ancient times. Thanks to its area of about 234 km², the reserve is the refuge of several species of birds, including the magnificent quetzal, the emblematic bird of Guatemala. It is also home to rare species, such as Baird's tapir.
