In Guanajuato, the largest Hispanic cultural festival in the world is held every autumn: the Cervantino International Festival, named after Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the famous novel Don Quixote. The program of this event celebrates artistic creation in Spanish and attracts each year more than 400,000 visitors and 2000 artists from all over the world. It includes theater, dance, music, street performance, visual arts... This festival is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Hispanic culture highlighted by the various artists. The event takes place throughout the city and is an essential element of city life: 49 theaters, 7 museums including photo exhibitions, as well as squares, streets, and churches of the city are mobilized. You will also find in Guanajuato the Iconographic Museum of the Quixote, housing a collection of works taking up the motif of the famous Spanish knight.
Among the many historical monuments that make the city rich in architecture, you will find the Juárez Theater, inaugurated in 1903. Its architecture mixes the colonial style with neoclassical and Moorish styles. You will be amazed as much by its colorful and exquisite interior decoration as by the columns of its façade and by the statues of the muses of ancient Greece on the roof, each representing a specific art form and dominating the steps of the theater.
Once your visit ends, you can stroll through the Jardín de la Unión, located right in front of the theater and bordered by the San Diego church, which also has an impressive façade. This small polygonal garden in the city's heart will bring you a moment of freshness and wonder thanks to its lush vegetation and fountain. Popular with locals, this place also has a kiosk under which the municipal orchestra performs on Thursday and Sunday evenings.
The visit to downtown Guanajuato can continue in its underground, created to avoid flooding, then used for traffic, creating an atypical architecture on two levels. Then discover ancient mines, the colorful 17th-century basilica, or the Museo Casa Diego Rivera.
Not far from the city center, the Guanajuato Mummies Museum houses the world's most extensive collection of natural mummies, resulting from an exhumation operation in the 1950s.
Less than thirty minutes from the city, you can also enjoy the spectacular landscapes on hiking trails accessible to all, such as the Cero de la Bufa or the Cero la Sirena, which will allow you to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
