Known to be Greece’s first capital, the town is believed to have been built by Poseidon’s son, Nafplios and the daughter of Danaus. This is only a fraction of the fascinating history behind this town, which dates back to the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War.
The town witnessed both Roman and Byzantine rulings, each leaving their traces to this day. Known to be ‘the Naples of the East’ to Venetians for its vibrant atmosphere and mystical ambiance.
Nafplio’s Bourtzi, Akronafplia and Palamidi castles are one of the main reasons behind the town’s dramatic charm. The Bourtzi castle takes the prize for most picturesque as it looks like it’s emerging from the sea. Built in 1473 in the shape of an irregular hexagon, the castle is reachable by a boat ride and inside, you get to witness its long history through the centuries.
As for the Palamidi castle, it’s famous for the 999 steps that lead to the top, which may sound like a lot, but once you climb all the way, you’ll be met with one of the best panoramic views of Nafplio and the sea surrounding it.
Nafplio doesn’t get its reputation for being the most romantic town in Greece for nothing, having places like the beach promenade of Nafplion, which connects the town’s small port with Arvanitia beach through its charming paved path.
History buffs will enjoy the entire city for its past, especially the Folklore Museum, which houses a stellar collection of ancient clothes, jewelry, paintings, sculptures, and more. There’s also the National Gallery, which is a work of art in itself as it takes place in a restored neoclassical building. Inside, pieces of art adorn the place, which tells the story of the Greek revolution.
Don’t miss out on one of the most important squares in Nafplion: Syntagma Square, Peloponnese, for its intriguing long history. It has a plane tree in the center, which made it known as the Platanos Square in the 19th century. Several historical monuments decorate the square, including the former mosque of Aga Pasha and the Trianon Old School. You can sit in the many cafes in the square and marvel at the charming wooden balconies and Turkish fountains.
