Rwanda, nicknamed "the land of a thousand hills," is attracting more and more visitors thanks to these emblematic places. Let's start with Huye: the cultural capital of the country. This is where the National Museum of Rwanda is located, which offers the most impressive ethnographic collection in East Africa. Between photo exhibitions, a replica of the royal palace and rooms dedicated to archaeology, this visit is a golden opportunity to learn more about the country's history and traditions. It is also in Huye that you will have the chance to contemplate Our Lady of Wisdom of Butare, the largest cathedral in the country.
You must visit one of its animal parks to go through Rwanda. The Akagera National Park, for example, aims to protect the animals of the savannah, mountains and marshes. In this expanse of 1,122 km2 are nearly 13,500 animals, including buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and lions.
Another must-see: The Volcanoes National Park, located in the far northwest of Rwanda. To visit this park is to meet gorillas and 200 species of birds. To better admire the fauna and flora of this park, do not hesitate to do activities such as hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, and walks in the surrounding villages.
If you want to recharge your batteries, what better than Lake Kivu? Located in the west of Rwanda, this 2700 km2 lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains and has deep emerald waters. If you go there, do not hesitate to go boating or stay in the wooden chalets around the lake.
Rwanda also has food based on roots like cassava and sweet potato. The traditional dishes are "the hotpot of peas" or beans seasoned with chili and palm oil served with chicken or fish, but also the "sombé with dried prawns," which are sardines from Lake Kivu with leaves of cassava as well as the highly consumed zebra steak in the country.
If you are in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, this summer, the KigaliUp festival awaits you. It highlights local and international reggae, blues, pop, and hip-hop artists each year. The festival aims to promote cultural diversity, encourage creativity and celebrate the arts in all their forms.
If you are more of a cinephile, opt for the Rwandan film festival. Better known as Hillywood, the festival takes place in July to present films of all genres. Based in Kigali, Hillywood is also itinerant and travels to towns and villages across Rwanda.
