Head to Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to discover the Kauai Tubing activity. A truck ride from Lihue will take you high through the lush forest and mountains of Kauai Island to ancient irrigation canals once used for sugar cane fields and now rehabilitated. The experience consists of a descent of these old buoy canals punctuated by tunnels and small slides. This activity is accessible to all as the current is not very strong, and the speed is moderate, allowing you to understand the extent and setting of sugar cane plantations present on the island in the past.
In Hawaii, you will find other activities around sugar cane, such as the Alexander & Baldwin Museum, located in a former caretaker's house within a sugar factory. The photos and videos in the museum will teach you about the daily life of workers in the sugar cane fields and the sugar industry. Then stop at Ocean Vodka Sugar Cane Farm and visit this vodka distillery made from organically and sustainably grown sugar cane.
Our journey continues to Mauritius, where sugar cane cultivation has been central. Discover The Sugar Adventure, which takes place at the Mauritius Sugar Museum. This tourist experience is located in Pamplemousses, north of the island, in a former sugar cane factory. Among the activities offered: cutting sugar cane stems, as was done at the time. Today, most harvesting is done using machines, but on some steep terrain, the work is still done by hand. A cocktail-making workshop and a tasting of products such as rum or sugar follow the activity. The Sugar Adventure ends with a visit to the museum, where objects and reconstructions of the daily lives of the people who helped shape the island are exhibited, as well as exhibitions behind the scenes of this industry and the different stages of production.
In Martinique, you can visit the last sugar unit of the island, in Trois-Ilets, during the harvest period and discover the museum associated with it, located in an old distillery. It traces the history of sugar cane on the island and explains the manufacture of rum during the visit to the factory in operation. In the town of Sainte-Marie is the Sugar Cane Railroad; this attraction is a round trip to the Saint-James rum museum aboard a small train in the middle of banana and sugar cane plantations. In June, a big party is organized in town, during which you will enjoy music and a tasting.
In Haiti, near Port-au-Prince, the Sugar Cane Historical Park, a former plantation now converted into an open-air museum, exhibits to visitors a reconstruction of life in the sugar cane fields in the early 19th century. Machines are preserved in excellent condition, and the museum building is divided into several rooms dealing with different themes. The museum hosts local outdoor events like jazz festivals or artisan markets.
In Guadeloupe, in Beauport, visit the Pays de la Canne, which has a fun outdoor course, a playground and tree climbing, and a small train to take you to the plantation. Let yourself be guided by the sound and visual effects of the exhibitions on the history of the site, the recorded testimonies, and the reproductions of old huts and mills. The laboratory visit will allow you to witness the process of sugar cane processing.
