DR Symfoniorkestret and chief conductor Fabio Luisi open the new season in Koncertsalen with two programme highlights: a Beethoven piano concerto featuring Austrian legend Rudolf Buchbinder, followed by Mahler's Symphony No. 4, with American soprano Liv Redpath taking the closing solo.
Note: the originally announced soprano Ying Fang has withdrawn; she is replaced by Liv Redpath, who has previously delighted audiences at DR Koncerthuset on multiple occasions and performed at the Glyndebourne Festival this summer.
Mahler's Fourth Symphony is a tribute to the innocence of childhood, casting an affectionate glance toward Mozart and Beethoven. Written for a small, refined orchestra, it moves through celestial bells and old German folk melodies before culminating in a soprano solo depicting paradisiacal bliss through a child's eyes — a moment uniting intense beauty with relief and resolution.
The Beethoven concerto offers an equally uplifting journey, combining drama, confrontation, reconciliation and a miraculous balance of depth and bravura.
For the Friday 4 September performance, an 'Extranummer' (encore) session takes place in the foyer after the concert: roughly half an hour of intimate music-making by DR Symfoniorkestret musicians who have chosen the programme themselves and will speak about the music. The bar is open and the lights are dimmed; admission is included in the concert ticket.
