アマラヴァティ・ストゥーパ

The Amaravati Stupa is an ancient Buddhist monument in Amaravati, in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is also known as the Mahachaitya, or the Great Stupa of Amaravati. The monument dates back to the 3rd century BCE and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Buddhist art and architecture in South India.

What to expect

A stupa is a dome-shaped structure built to hold Buddhist relics and to mark a sacred site, and visiting one is a chance to see early Buddhist building traditions up close. Amaravati is a place for those with an interest in art history, archaeology or religion, and for travellers who want to look beyond the better-known sites of India.

Why visit

  • See a major monument of early Buddhist art and architecture in South India.
  • Explore a site that reflects the region's long history of Buddhist culture.
  • Combine the visit with the wider sights of Andhra Pradesh and Guntur District.

Because the monument is one of the region's most important historical sites, a visit suits a slower pace, with time to walk around the site and to take in its scale and detail.
