シルク・ド・ナヴァセル

The Cirque de Navacelles is a canyon landscape in southern France, in the Occitania region, within reach of Montpellier. Here the Vis River has carved a vast amphitheater into the limestone, its steep walls rising around a wide basin of fields and a small hamlet. The site is listed by UNESCO, and it is the kind of place that rewards slowing down.

What the visit offers

The main pleasure is the view. Viewpoints along the rim let you take in the whole sweep of the cirque at once, with the river winding through the floor far below. Looking down, you can see how the land folds and bends around the bend of the Vis, a shape that is hard to appreciate from ground level.

Below the rim is a charming hamlet, which gives the landscape a human scale. Walking down among its houses and fields is a quieter way to experience the place than simply looking out from above.

Walking and exploring

Scenic hiking trails lead through the cirque, and for many visitors they are the best way to see it. Expect changes in height and terrain, and plan for the walk back up if you go down into the basin. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, particularly in warmer months.

Planning a day

  • Allow time for the viewpoints, which are worth lingering over.
  • Set aside a few hours if you plan to walk down to the hamlet and along the trails.
  • Combine the trip with a stay in or around Montpellier, which makes a convenient base.
  • Check conditions and access before you set out, as the terrain is rugged.

For travelers who enjoy dramatic natural scenery, the Cirque de Navacelles is a worthwhile outing from Montpellier. It offers wide views, a peaceful hamlet and walks through striking countryside, all within a day's reach of the city.
