明石海峡大橋

世界最長の中央径間1,991メートルを誇る吊橋で、Kobeと Awaji Island を結んでいます。1998年に完成した工学技術の傑作で、美しい夜間ライトアップでも知られています。

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge spans the strait between Kobe and Awaji Island, carrying road traffic across the water in Hyogo Prefecture, in Japan's Kansai Region. It is also known as the Pearl Bridge. Its address is Higashimaiko-cho, Tarumi-ku, Kobe, and the bridge's own contact number is +81-78-709-3636.

What makes it notable

The bridge is a suspension bridge with a central span of 1,991 meters, the longest central span of any suspension bridge in the world. It was completed in 1998, and it is as much an engineering project as a crossing. Visitors who enjoy seeing large structures up close, or who simply like to understand how a long span is held up, will find plenty to study from the shoreline.

What a visit offers

  • Views across the strait. The water and the surrounding coast give the bridge its setting, and the towers and cables are most striking when seen from nearby.
  • Night illumination. The bridge is lit at night, which changes its appearance and makes an evening look worthwhile.
  • A link to Awaji Island. Because the bridge connects Kobe with Awaji, it fits naturally into a trip that extends across the strait.

Kobe itself offers a range of things to see and do around the bridge, and the wider Kansai Region is easy to reach from the city. Those planning a day here may want to combine the crossing with other parts of the city.

Check the contact number above for current details before you travel, as arrangements for viewing and access can change.
