アタカマ州

The Atacama Region lies in the north of Chile, in South America, and is home to the world's driest non-polar desert. For visitors, it is a destination defined by its extreme aridity and by landscapes that feel more like another planet than anywhere on Earth.

What to expect

The region rewards travellers who enjoy wide, open country and quiet horizons. Much of the terrain is sparse and stark, with salt flats, dry basins and rock formations that the description of the area compares to a lunar surface. Light and distance play a large part in the experience, so a visit tends to be as much about looking as about doing.

  • Landscape: unique, lunar-like scenery shaped by extreme dryness.
  • Setting: a northern Chilean region in South America.
  • Character: a destination for those drawn to remote and unusual terrain.

Planning your visit

Because the desert is so remote and dry, it is worth preparing before you set out. Bring water, sun protection and warm layers, since temperatures can change sharply between day and night. Distances between points of interest can be considerable, so plan your route with care and allow time for travel across the region.

The Atacama suits visitors who want to step away from crowded places and spend time in a setting few other regions can match. Come with curiosity and flexible plans, and the desert will likely leave a lasting impression.
