Aix-en-Provence is an elegant university city in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southern France. It was once the capital of Provence, and its historic centre still carries that sense of past importance in its streets, squares and façades. The city is also known by older names, Ais de Provença in Provençal and Aquae Sextiae in Latin.

What to see and do

Much of the pleasure of Aix lies in walking. The historic centre rewards an unhurried stroll, with its fountains and tree-lined avenues giving the city its character. The town is closely associated with the painter Paul Cézanne, and visitors interested in his life and work will find that the connection runs through the place itself, from its light and landscape to its streets.

The markets are another highlight. Local stalls offer produce and everyday goods, and they are a good way to get a feel for how the city lives day to day.

Planning your visit

  • Allow time to wander without a fixed route, since the old centre is best discovered on foot.
  • Check market days and museum opening times before you go, as these vary.
  • Combine your visit with other stops in the wider Provence region, which is easy to reach from the city.

Aix-en-Provence suits visitors who enjoy architecture, art, markets and a relaxed pace, and it makes a rewarding stop for anyone travelling through southern France.
