アナコ

Anaco is a city in Anzoátegui state, in eastern Venezuela, set on the country's great eastern plains. It is an important centre of the oil industry and is often described as a gateway to Venezuela's petroleum heartland, so visitors come here with a clear sense of purpose as well as an interest in the surrounding landscape.

Industry and the llano

What makes Anaco distinctive is the way two very different worlds meet. The city's industrial role gives it a practical, working character, while the traditions of the llano, the open plains that stretch across this part of Venezuela, shape its everyday culture. A visit offers a window onto both: the story of the country's oil heritage and the rhythm of plains life that has long defined the region.

What a visit offers

  • A look at Venezuela's oil heritage, the industry that has shaped the city and its region.
  • An introduction to traditional llano culture and the lifestyle of the eastern plains.
  • A base from which to explore the natural areas in the surrounding countryside.

Because Anaco lies within reach of these natural areas, it works well as a starting point for trips into the plains rather than only as a place to stop in passing. Travellers interested in the mix of industry and open country will find that the city gives them both context and a convenient place to set out from.

Anaco suits visitors who want to understand how Venezuela's economy and landscape fit together, and who are happy to explore a working city at its own pace.
