アマルフィ大聖堂

Amalfi Cathedral stands over the main piazza of Amalfi, on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, and it is one of the first things a visitor sees when arriving in the town. Its presence shapes the square around it, and a visit here is a natural starting point for exploring the old town on foot.

What to look for

  • The facade: The cathedral's front is a striking example of Arab-Norman style, with a pattern of colour and arches that makes it easy to recognise from across the piazza.
  • The bronze doors: The doors are finely worked and are among the features visitors most often pause to examine.
  • The crypt: Beneath the church, the crypt holds the relics of St. Andrew, the town's patron saint, and is a quieter space than the piazza above.
  • The mosaics: Medieval mosaics decorate parts of the interior and reward a slow look.

The cathedral is a church as well as a monument, so visitors are asked to dress and behave with the respect a place of worship deserves.

Around the cathedral

Because the church anchors Amalfi's main square, a visit fits easily into a stroll through the town's narrow streets, its cafés and its waterfront. The coast itself, with its steep hillsides and views over the sea, gives the trip a setting that matches the historic buildings.

Amalfi Cathedral suits travellers interested in medieval architecture, religious history and the older heart of the coast. Allow time to see both the outside and the crypt, and check opening arrangements before you go, as these can vary.
