Amer Fort stands on a hillside in Amer, a town just outside Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is also known as Amber Fort or Amber Palace, and it is one of the best-known landmarks in the region. The fort is a palace-fortress built in the 16th century, and its architecture blends Hindu and Mughal styles, so visitors see both in its courtyards, halls and decorative detailing. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What a visit is like

Most of the fort's appeal lies in its scale and its design. The approach climbs up the hill, and the walls, gateways and courtyards reward slow walking. Visitors often spend a good part of the day moving between the different areas, looking closely at the carved stonework and the spaces where the palace was used. Because the site is large and partly uphill, comfortable shoes and a steady pace suit the visit well.
