アユタヤ

1350年から1767年までシャム王国の首都として栄えた古都遺跡で知られるタイ中部の県で、現在はユネスコ世界遺産に登録されています。

Ayutthaya is a province in central Thailand, a short journey north of Bangkok, and it is best known for the ruins of its ancient capital. The city served as the seat of the Siamese Kingdom from 1350 to 1767, and its remains are now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What the visit is like

Much of the appeal lies in the ruins themselves. Crumbling temples, stupas and monastery grounds are spread across the historic site, and walking among them gives a clear sense of the scale of the old capital. Many visitors choose to explore on foot or by bicycle, moving at an easy pace from one site to the next.

The historic area suits a slow, reflective day. It is less a single attraction than a landscape of old buildings, where the layout of the former city can still be traced.

Around the ruins

The province offers more than the historic core. Visitors can spend time along its rivers and canals, and the surrounding countryside gives a quieter contrast to the busier city life nearby. Local markets and small eateries are a good way to see everyday life in the area.

Planning your trip

  • Ayutthaya is within reach of Bangkok, so it works well as a day trip or an overnight stay.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, since much of the site involves walking over uneven ground.
  • Allow time to pace your visit, as the historic area is extensive.

For travellers interested in history, archaeology or the story of the old Siamese kingdom, Ayutthaya offers a rewarding and unhurried visit.
