アラカジュ

Aracaju is the coastal capital of Sergipe, one of the smaller states in northeastern Brazil. It sits on the Atlantic, and for a visitor it works both as a city stay and as a base for trips into the surrounding coast and river country.

The city and its beaches

Aracaju's urban beaches are part of everyday city life, so a visit can be as simple as an afternoon by the sea followed by a walk back into town. The historic centre is the place to slow down. Its colonial buildings are painted in bright colours, and wandering the streets gives a clear sense of the city's older layers beside its modern growth.

Day trips from the coast

Aracaju is also the gateway to the dunes of Mangue Seco and to the scenic delta region where the São Francisco River meets the sea. Both make good excursions for travellers who want to see more of the landscape than the city offers. Plan the trips around the time you have, since the dunes and the delta are some distance from the centre.

Eating in Aracaju

The food is one of the strongest reasons to visit. Fresh seafood features prominently, and the menus also draw on traditional dishes from northeastern Brazil. Eating well here tends to mean sitting down to a regional meal rather than grabbing something quick, and it is a good way to get to know the place.

Aracaju suits visitors who want a relaxed coastal city with a readable historic core, easy access to the beach, and a cuisine worth planning around. For a longer stay, combine the city with one or two trips to the dunes or the river delta.
