アルウラ

Al-Ula is an ancient oasis city in northwestern Saudi Arabia, in Al-Madinah Province. It sits in a valley of dramatic desert landscapes, where rock formations rise sharply from the sand and the green of the oasis stands out against the surrounding terrain.

What draws visitors

The city is best known for its archaeological heritage, particularly its well-preserved sites from the Nabatean civilisation. Visitors come to walk among these ancient remains and to see how the builders of this region shaped the rock. The setting makes the visit as much about landscape as about history.

What a visit looks like

  • Exploring the Nabatean sites, which are the centre of most trips to the area
  • Taking in the desert scenery, especially the rock formations around the valley
  • Spending time in the oasis, where the contrast with the dry land is striking

Because the archaeological sites and the landscape are closely linked, a visit suits travellers interested in history, geology or simply being in open desert country. Most people plan their time around the sites they most want to see, and allow room for slow walking in the heat-conscious hours of the day.

Al-Ula is also known as Al Ula, the spelling you may see on maps and in travel listings. If you are deciding whether to go, consider how much time you have, since the sites and the surrounding valley reward a relaxed pace rather than a rushed tour.
