アルタイ・タワン・ボグド

Altai Tavan Bogd is a national park in Mongolia's Bayan-Ölgii Province, in the far west of the country, where the Altai Mountains rise around some of Mongolia's highest peaks. The name is also given in Mongolian Cyrillic as Алтай таван богд. The park is a destination in its own right, and the nearby settlement serves as a remote base for those who come to climb and explore.

The setting is mountainous and wild. Visitors come here chiefly for the high ground and the terrain it offers, and the area is known as a base for mountaineering and adventure tourism. For many travellers, the appeal lies in the sense of distance: this is a place reached with effort and left with a clear view of the peaks.

What a visit is like

  • A base for mountaineering, suited to those with climbing experience or an appetite for expeditions.
  • A starting point for adventure trips into the surrounding mountains.
  • A remote corner of Asia, far from the larger cities of Mongolia.

Planning ahead

Because the area is remote, it pays to plan carefully before setting out. Travellers should check the route, the season and the conditions in advance, and consider how they will travel in and out of the mountains. Those with a taste for wild landscapes and serious outdoor activity will find in Altai Tavan Bogd a destination that rewards the effort of reaching it.
