アルタンブラグ

Altanbulag is a town in Selenge Province in northern Mongolia, sitting right on the border with Russia. Its position makes it one of the country's most important points for cross-border trade, and for many travellers it serves as the gateway between Mongolia and Siberia.

What kind of visit it makes

Altanbulag is less a sightseeing destination in its own right than a place of passage. Visitors tend to pass through on their way north or south across the frontier, or to spend a short stop here while arranging onward travel. If you are interested in how the two countries connect, a stop here gives you a direct sense of that border life, with the flow of goods and people that shapes the town.

Getting a feel for the area

  • The border: The town's whole character comes from its frontier with Russia, and that is the main reason to come.
  • Trade and movement: Cross-border commerce is central to daily life here, so the town suits anyone curious about how trade routes work in practice.
  • Selenge Province: Altanbulag belongs to this northern province, and it can be a useful base for exploring the wider region.

The town also goes by its Mongolian Cyrillic name, Алтанбулаг, which you may see on signs and timetables. Plan your visit around your onward connections, since the town's value lies largely in what lies on either side of it.
