アルメリア

Almería is a Mediterranean coastal city in Andalusia, in southern Spain. It sits on the eastern side of the region, facing the sea, and serves as the gateway to the Costa de Almería, a stretch of coast known for its desert-like landscapes. The city is also known by the older name Al-Mariyyat, a reminder of its long history on this shore.

What to see in the city

The city's most striking landmark is the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress that rises above the old quarter. Walking up through its walls gives a clear sense of the city's layered past, and the views over the rooftops and the harbour are a good reason to make the climb.

Almería also has a film industry heritage. Its dry, open scenery has long attracted filmmakers, and visitors interested in cinema may enjoy tracing that connection through the city and the landscapes around it.

Beyond the city

Almería makes a convenient base for exploring the Costa de Almería. The coastline and inland areas feature arid, almost lunar scenery that contrasts sharply with the green image many people hold of Spain. Travellers who enjoy quiet walks, open horizons and the sea can spend a day or more discovering these landscapes.

Is it right for you?

  • Visit for a historic fortress and a relaxed Mediterranean city.
  • Visit for landscapes that feel unlike most of Europe.
  • Visit for a base from which to explore the wider coast.

If you want a slower pace, a mix of history, sea and dramatic scenery, Almería offers all three within easy reach of one another.
