アレクサンドル・ネフスキー大聖堂

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands on Toompea Hill in the upper town of Tallinn, Estonia, at Lossi plats 10. It is a Russian Orthodox cathedral, completed in 1900, and its onion domes make it one of the most easily recognized landmarks in the city. In Estonian it is known as Aleksander Nevski katedraal.

What to expect

The building is imposing, and its silhouette is often the first thing visitors notice when they look up from the lower town. Because it sits on the hill, the cathedral works well as a stop on a walk through the upper town, where cobbled streets, old stone walls and views over the rooftops of Tallinn make the climb worthwhile.

Around the cathedral

  • Toompea Hill, the historic upper part of Tallinn, which is compact enough to explore on foot.
  • The surrounding streets and squares, where you can combine the visit with other sights on the hill.
  • The lower town below, reached by the same slopes, for cafés, shops and the medieval old town.

If you enjoy architecture, the domes and the setting on the hill are worth a slow look, and the visit fits easily into a half-day or a longer stroll through the city centre.
