Cabo de Gata is a natural park on the south-eastern coast of Spain, in the province of Almería. It protects what is often described as the country's most arid landscape, a place where the scenery feels closer to a desert than to the Mediterranean coast most visitors picture.

What you will see

  • Volcanic cliffs that drop dramatically to the sea, giving the coastline a rugged, sculpted look.
  • Secluded golden beaches, several of them reached by footpaths rather than roads, so they often feel quiet.
  • Clear Mediterranean waters that make the coast attractive for swimming and simply sitting by the shore.
  • Desert flora adapted to dry conditions, found nowhere else in quite the same way on the Spanish mainland.
  • Bird life, including important colonies, and shallow lagoons where flamingos wade.

Villages along the coast

The reserve shelters small fishing villages such as San José, which have kept much of their authentic character. Here you can find simple seafood, a slower pace, and a sense of how the coast has been lived in for generations. Visitors often combine a day on the beaches with an unhurried lunch in one of these villages.

Planning your visit

Cabo de Gata suits those who enjoy walking, birdwatching, swimming and quiet coastal scenery more than nightlife or large resorts. Because the landscape is so open and dry, bringing water, sun protection and sensible footwear is wise. The park is best approached as a place to slow down and explore at your own pace.
