Cape Reinga sits at the northernmost tip of New Zealand, on the Aupōuri Peninsula in the Far North. It is a landmark that many travellers come to see for its wild setting: here the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, and the two waters can be seen pushing against each other in swirling currents from the cliff top.

What you will see

  • The lighthouse perched on the cliff, which is the site's most recognisable feature.
  • The meeting of the two oceans, visible from the lookout as currents and churning water.
  • Broad coastal views along the headland, best appreciated slowly and with some time to spare.

A sacred place

For Māori, Cape Reinga is known as Te Rerenga Wairua, the leaping place of spirits. It holds deep spiritual significance as the point from which souls are said to depart. Visitors are encouraged to behave respectfully, keeping noise low and treating the site with the quiet attention it deserves.

Planning your visit

The cape is a place to come for its scenery and its meaning rather than for a long list of activities, so it suits a relaxed stop on a journey through the Far North. Because it lies at the very end of the peninsula, allow time for the drive, and dress for coastal weather, which can change quickly. The surrounding area of the Far North offers further coastal scenery to explore before or after your visit.
