ヨーロッパとアジアにまたがるトルコ北西部の県で、歴史的なGallipoli半島と地中海と黒海を結ぶ戦略的要衝のDardanelles海峡がある。

Çanakkale is a province in northwestern Turkey, set where the country meets two continents. Its territory straddles Europe and Asia, and the Dardanelles strait runs through it, linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Black Sea. Few places in Turkey let a visitor stand with one foot on each side of such a route, so the setting alone gives the province its character.

What draws visitors

The historic Gallipoli Peninsula is the province's best-known feature. Its landscape of ridges, coastline and memorial grounds is tied to the First World War campaign fought there, and it attracts people who want to understand that history on the ground. The strait itself adds a second dimension: ships still pass along a waterway that has long mattered for trade and naval movement, and the views across the water are a reason to linger.

Planning a visit

  • Allow time for the peninsula, which is spread out and is best explored at a relaxed pace.
  • Give at least part of a day to the waterfront and the strait, where the crossing between continents is easiest to appreciate.
  • Check opening arrangements for sites and memorials before setting out, as these can vary.

Çanakkale suits travellers interested in history, landscape and coastal scenery, and those curious about a place defined by its position between two worlds. Those looking mainly for a lively nightlife scene may find a quieter pace here, which many visitors come to appreciate.
