デンマーク王立図書館

The Royal Danish Library, known to Copenhagen locals as the Black Diamond (Sort Diamant), is Denmark's national library. It stands on the waterfront at Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1, in the centre of the city, and its gleaming black granite extension makes it one of the most recognisable modern buildings along the harbour.

What you will find

The library holds an extensive collection of books, manuscripts and cultural artefacts, reflecting Denmark's written and visual heritage. Because it is a working national library, much of its material is kept for research, but it also opens its doors to visitors who come to see the building, browse its exhibitions and take in the setting.

Why visit

  • The architecture. The contrast between the older red-brick part of the complex and the sleek, dark extension is the main draw for many visitors, especially when seen from the water.
  • Exhibitions and events. The library also works as a cultural venue, so the programme of exhibitions and events can give your visit a particular focus.
  • The waterfront. Its position on the harbour means a walk around the building pairs well with a stroll along the water in one of Copenhagen's central districts.

Planning your trip

The library sits in the heart of Copenhagen, so it is easy to combine with other sights in the city centre. Because exhibitions and events change, it is worth checking what is on before you go, so you know whether a particular show or talk is part of your plans. A visit suits anyone interested in books, history or contemporary architecture, and it is equally rewarding as a calm stop between other sights.
