Bryggens Museum is an archaeological museum in Bergen, Norway, set in the heart of the historic waterfront. It is also known as the Museum of Bryggen, and its address is Dreggsallmenningen 3, 5003 Bergen.

The museum is built over the excavated ruins of the old Hanseatic quarter, the area of Bryggen that forms part of Bergen's UNESCO World Heritage site. Rather than being a building that simply sits beside the past, it stands on top of it, so the foundations of the medieval town are part of the visit itself.

What you will see

The collection displays medieval artifacts recovered from the excavations, alongside the remains of the foundations that once supported the wooden buildings of the quarter. Together they give a grounded picture of daily life in a trading settlement that was for centuries closely tied to the Hanseatic merchants.

Why visit

  • A museum that reads the ground beneath your feet, with the excavated ruins as the centrepiece.
  • Medieval objects shown in the place where they were found, which suits visitors interested in archaeology and urban history.
  • An easy addition to a walk along the Bryggen waterfront, where the old wooden houses line the harbour.

Because the museum is part of Bryggen itself, it works well as a stop between the harbour, the surrounding streets and the other sights of the old town. To check opening arrangements before you go, you can call the museum on +47 55 58 80 10.
