The Ring

The Ring is one of downtown Montréal's most striking and photographed landmarks — a monumental 30-metre steel hoop suspended dramatically between the modernist towers of Henry Cobb's 1950s Place Ville Marie. Unveiled in June 2022 above Esplanade Place Ville Marie, it's a piece of visual poetry that frames Montréal's beloved mountain, Mount Royal, within its perfect circle, marrying the natural landmark to the revitalized public space of the downtown office complex. The effect is quietly magical: a giant lens hovering over the plaza, drawing the eye up and out toward the city beyond, and it has quickly become one of the most visited and Instagrammed sites in Montréal.

The engineering is as impressive as the poetry. Built from tubes 80 centimetres in diameter, the hoop measures a full 30 metres (98 feet) across and weighs some 23 tonnes (50,000 pounds), yet it appears to float effortlessly between the towers. More than a sculpture, it functions as a window onto more than 200 years of history, opening a direct sightline from the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel and Esplanade PVM up to McGill University, the former Royal Victoria Hospital, and Mount Royal itself. In a lovely touch of Montréal flair, The Ring's evening illumination mirrors that of the Mount Royal Cross — echoing one of the city's most recognizable symbols while underscoring the historic bond between the built heritage strung along this important downtown axis.

The Ring was designed by the award-winning landscape architects Claude Cormier + Associés — the celebrated team behind some of Montréal's most memorable urban interventions — and took nearly two years to complete, drawing together a multidisciplinary team from Montréal and Trois-Rivières. It arrived as the final, crowning piece of a five-year, $200-million revitalization of Place Ville Marie, a project that completely redesigned the Esplanade and brought the gourmet food hall Le Cathcart to the site. By returning the plaza to its original vocation as a gathering place in the heart of the central business district, The Ring was conceived to add to the city's vibrancy, spirit, and resilience — a shining emblem of the shared connection between Montréal, its citizens, and its visitors.

And its story is still being written. In the years ahead, The Ring will look out over the sustainable projects taking shape along McGill College Avenue, including the REM's new McGill Station and Place Oscar-Peterson, a sprawling urban oasis set to green the avenue. Bold, visionary, and unmistakably Montréal, The Ring is far more than a photo opportunity — it's a symbol of a downtown reinventing itself, and a beautiful frame through which to see the city's past, present, and future all at once.
