La Dame aux camélias is a large-scale neoclassical narrative ballet in two acts, choreographed by Canadian choreographer Peter Quanz and produced by Les Grands Ballets. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils' celebrated novel, the work traces the story of Marguerite Gautier — a courtesan both admired and condemned — who dares to believe in a simple love when she meets Armand Duval, only for their passion to collide with the moral conventions of 19th-century Parisian society.
The production features extensive dramatic roles for its dancers, and its sets and costumes evoke the refined elegance of 19th-century Paris. The musical score, assembled and arranged by Florian Ziemen in close collaboration with Quanz, draws on works by von Weber as well as composers Lili Boulanger, Fanny Mendelssohn, and Clara Schumann, forming an emotionally rich soundscape that functions as a narrative voice in its own right.
The creative team includes set design by Michael Gianfrancesco, costumes by Anne Armit, lighting by Marc Parent, props by Normand Blais, and narration by Jonathan Michaud. Dancer Maude Sabourin is featured in the production.
Six performances take place at Théâtre Maisonneuve: Wednesday September 23 at 20:00, Thursday September 24 at 20:00, Friday September 25 at 20:00, Saturday September 26 at 14:00 and 20:00, and Sunday September 27 at 14:00. Running time is approximately 2 hours 10 minutes including intermission.
