Asahikawa is the second-largest city on Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan's main islands. It lies in the Hokkaido Region, a place of wide skies, cold winters and a slower rhythm than the cities of Honshu. Visitors who come here often do so for three reasons: the zoo, the ramen, and the sake, with the northern wilderness close at hand.

Things to see and do

The city is known for its zoo, a natural first stop for families and anyone curious about the animals of the north. Asahikawa is also known for its ramen noodles, which suit the region's colder weather well, and for sake brewing. A visit can easily be built around sampling local bowls of noodles and tasting sake made in the area.

A gateway to the north

  • Northern wilderness: the city serves as a gateway to wild areas of northern Hokkaido, making it a practical base for travellers who want to get outdoors.
  • Food and drink: ramen and sake are the city's best-known local pleasures.
  • Animals: the zoo gives an easy, relaxed day out.

Asahikawa is worth considering if you want a city that combines local food and drink with easy access to the quieter landscapes of Japan's north. It is also written 旭川 in Japanese, which you may see on signs and maps during your journey.
