Al Ain is an oasis city in the Abu Dhabi emirate of the United Arab Emirates, in Asia. It is often called the Garden City, a name that reflects its many green spaces, set against the desert landscape that surrounds much of the country. Known in Arabic as العين, it is widely regarded as a traditional cultural centre of the UAE.
What a visit offers
- Green spaces: the city's gardens and oasis areas give a welcome contrast to the surrounding desert.
- Ancient forts: the old fortifications speak to the city's long history as a settlement in the region.
- UNESCO World Heritage sites: the city's protected sites recognise their importance to the wider world.
- Cultural life: as a traditional centre, Al Ain is a good place to see something of Emirati heritage and everyday life.
Planning your trip
Al Ain suits visitors who want to look beyond the coastal cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Allow time to walk among the gardens and to visit the forts and heritage sites, which are the main reasons people make the journey. Because it lies inland in the emirate, it works well as a day trip or as a stop on a longer tour of the region. Check opening times and access for individual sites before you set out, as these can vary.
