Les Arceaux is a district of Montpellier in the Occitania region of southern France. It takes its name from the aqueduct that crosses it, a graceful line of arches that rises above tightly leafy streets. The aqueduct dates from the 18th century, and its arches are the first thing most visitors notice on arrival.

What to see and do

  • The aqueduct: walk beneath the arches and look up at the stonework as the streets change around you.
  • Promenade du Peyrou: a short walk away, this is a good place to continue a stroll and take in the wider city.
  • The Saturday market: the district's market is lively and draws local shoppers, a good way to see everyday Montpellier at work.
  • Cafés: the neighbourhood has relaxed places to sit, watch the street and take a break between walks.

Why visit

Les Arceaux suits a visitor who prefers an unhurried visit to a busy sightseeing circuit. Its atmosphere is that of an established local neighbourhood rather than a showpiece, so the pleasure lies in wandering, sitting down for a coffee and seeing how people in the area live. It pairs well with a wider day exploring the old city and its surrounding gardens.
