锡吉里耶古城

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and palace in the Matale District of Sri Lanka's Central Province. It rises sharply from the surrounding plain, and it is one of the country's most recognisable archaeological sites.

What you will see

The site is built around a dramatic granite outcrop. The fortress and palace date from the 5th century and were laid out with care across the rock and the land below it. Visitors can explore the remains of the palace, the surviving frescoes that decorate parts of the rock, and the gardens that were designed around the base of the outcrop. The combination of engineered architecture, painted galleries and landscaped grounds gives the place its character.

What kind of visit it makes

  • A half-day or full-day outing, with time to walk the grounds slowly.
  • A chance to see frescoes and gardens that survive from the 5th century.
  • A strong interest for anyone curious about ancient Sri Lankan history and archaeology.

Because the ascent involves climbing, it suits visitors who are comfortable on steps and uneven ground. Wearing sturdy footwear and bringing water is sensible, particularly in warm weather.

Around the site

Sigiriya sits in the Central Province, a region of hills, farmland and forest that makes a good base for wider travel. The town of Sigiriya lies close by, so visitors can combine a visit to the fortress with time spent in the surrounding countryside.
