阿马尔菲

Amalfi is a town on Italy's Amalfi Coast, in the south of the country. It was once a powerful maritime republic, and that past still shapes its character today. Set between steep cliffs and the blue water of the Gulf of Salerno, it is one of the most visited places along this stretch of coast, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

What to see

The town is anchored by its cathedral, which stands out for its Arab-Norman architecture. Its façade and the broad flight of steps leading up to it make a striking first view when you arrive. Inside, the cathedral rewards a slow look, and the square in front of it is a good place to pause and take in the surroundings.

Away from the main square, the streets narrow and wind between buildings, and it is easy to wander without a plan. Along the way you will pass historic paper mills and shops selling traditional ceramics, which give a sense of the local crafts that have long been part of daily life here.

Beyond the town

  • Beaches, which offer a restful break from sightseeing and a different view of the cliffs and the sea.
  • The dramatic setting itself, with the town rising from the water and the surrounding slopes framing every walk.
  • The wider Amalfi Coast, reached by boat or road, for travellers who want to see more of this part of Campania.

Amalfi suits a visit that mixes history, slow walking and time by the water. Allow room in your day for the streets and the cathedral, and leave an afternoon free for the beach. Visitors who enjoy sea views, old architecture and a relaxed pace will find it a rewarding place to stop.
