Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares is a city in the Community of Madrid, in central Spain, a short journey east of the capital. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognised for its university city and its historic centre, and it is the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. The city is also known in older sources as Complutum.

What the city is known for

The city has long been an important centre of learning. Its university and academic life shaped the place for centuries, and that story remains visible in the streets and buildings of the old town. Its history also includes a long association with the seat of cardinal-archbishops, which gave it a religious and civic weight beyond its size.

What a visit offers

  • Walking the historic centre, the setting of the university city recognised by UNESCO.
  • Following the connection with Cervantes, who was born here.
  • Seeing how a university town and an archiepiscopal seat have marked its layout and character.

Because it lies close to Madrid, Alcalá de Henares works well as a half-day or day trip for visitors who want to see something beyond the capital. Those staying longer can combine the city with other destinations in the Community of Madrid, while those who prefer a slower pace can spend the time simply wandering its historic streets.
